Our Theologian in Residence, the Rev. Dr. Luigi Gioia, continues a year-long course to dive into all the main areas of theology: Faith, Scripture, Tradition, God, Christ, Salvation, the Holy Spirit, the Trinity, and the Church – always with an eye to their relevance for spirituality and for everyday life.
After the summer break we resume our series Sharp Faith with a series of talks on the Holy Spirit. Which pronoun should we use for the Holy Spirit: “he”, “it”, or “she”? Theologians and spiritual authors cannot make up their minds. The uncertainty, of course, is not about whether the Holy Spirit is female, male, or a ‘thing’. The challenge lies in what we mean when we say that the Holy Spirit is a person. In our everyday language ‘person’ is synonymous with individuality and ‘personhood’ is associated with the inherent dignity of every human being. How can a word so intimately associated with human identity help us to understand who God and especially who the Holy Spirit is? And especially why is it important that we should apply it not only to the Father and the Son but also to the Holy Spirit?
The Adult Education program at Saint Thomas Church offers sound Christian teaching presented with intellectual vigor, teaching that is grounded in Holy Scripture, mediated by the catholic tradition that is the inheritance of Anglicanism and set forth in the Book of Common Prayer.
