Our Theologian in Residence, the Rev. Dr. Luigi Gioia, continues a year-long course to dive into all the main areas of theology: Faith, Scripture, Tradition, God, Christ, Salvation, the Holy Spirit, the Trinity, and the Church – always with an eye to their relevance for spirituality and for everyday life.

Once the first generations of Christians understood that the monotheist faith of the Bible required the confession that Jesus is God in exactly the same way as Yahweh, the focus of controversy became the reality and the fullness of his humanity. Some people (called “Docetists”) believed that human weaknesses were incompatible with divinity: for them Jesus’ body was just an appearance. Others thought that Jesus did not have a human mind or a human will. It took almost another century of reflection to reach the conclusion that if Jesus had not been human exactly like us he would not have been able to save us. This was enshrined in Gregory of Nazianzus’ saying “What has not been assumed by God has not been healed”.

The Adult Education program at Saint Thomas Church offers sound Christian teaching presented with intellectual vigor, teaching that is grounded in Holy Scripture, mediated by the catholic tradition that is the inheritance of Anglicanism and set forth in the Book of Common Prayer.
