John Scott plays the six organ symphonies of French organist and composer Louis Vierne, one of the great concert organists and composers of the 20th century, best known for his organ works. In each of the six Symphonies for Organ, Vierne explores a method of generating a symphony from just a few themes. He once stated that he was far more attracted by musical thematicism than by tone color.
Born virtually blind, Vierne showed an early aptitude for music. After completing school in the provinces, he entered the Paris Conservatory. From 1892, he served as an assistant organist to the organist Charles-Marie Widor at the church of Saint-Sulpice in Paris. His works are said to reflect the vast and decorated architecture of Notre Dame in Paris where he served as principal organist from 1900 until his death in 1937. The magnificent French Gothic splendor of Saint Thomas Church provides the ideal backdrop for listening to John Scott play Vierne’s masterpieces on the Arents Memorial Organ.
