We shall dedicate the season of Advent to a series of four talks on the 2005 Pulitzer Prize winner novel Gilead by Marilynne Robinson. One of the most urgent questions of our time is whether we can still celebrate life as a gift in a culture dominated by Nihilism. Ames, the main character of this novel, has a keen awareness of the transience of life in a small provincial town and yet displays a joyful relation to it. His vision is permeated by a deep faith that has learnt how to find value and beauty in finite things and avoid treating them as sheer means to something eternal. A great deal can be learnt from the wisdom of one of America’s greatest living authors. Participants are warmly encouraged to read the novel but they do not need to have completed it to benefit from the talks.
