In Marilynne Robinson’s novel, the town of Gilead first appears as the idyllic background for pastor John Ames’ deep reflections on the beauty of life. The place is proud of its abolitionist history – and yet is now unable to welcome one of the other characters of the novel, Jack, who is married to an Afro-American woman. As the reader is progressively introduced into the complicated relation between the ‘good’ pastor John Ames and the ‘wayward’ Jack, it becomes clear that Gilead and its inhabitants have become ‘good’ in a way which is in fact toxic to those who don’t happen to belong, good as segregated and self-conscious. It also appears that the path to healing from this toxic kind of goodness is solidarity.
