Saint Matthias

O Almighty God, who into the place of Judas didst choose thy faithful servant Matthias to be of the number of the Twelve: Grant that thy Church, being delivered from false apostles, may always be ordered and guided by faithful and true pastors; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Victor Austin and Jeremy Waldron will lead this three-week course. On the first Wednesday, February 17, Father Austin will introduce the famous parable and draw out its background, the significance of its context, and some alternative interpretations. In the second session, February 24, Professor Waldron will speak on so-called “Good Samaritan” laws. And in the third and final session, March 2, Professor Waldron will address the implicit cosmopolitanism of the parable, as he contrasts the Good Samaritan with Dickens’s character, Mrs. Jellyby.
