A New Yorker for fifth years, Benita is originally from California where she is an enrolled member of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. She is married to Stephen Potters, who was also born in California. They have two daughters, two sons-in-law, and six grandchildren. All six grandchildren were baptized at Saint Thomas, one a year from 2011 through 2017.

Benita continues to be involved with the family real estate business in California. Her volunteer commitments include service on the New York board of the Smithsonian Institute National Museum of the American Indian, where her positions included vice chair. Concurrently she served on the board of the Agua Caliente Cultural Museum on her reservation in Palm Springs, California, the first Smithsonian satellite museum on Native land. She was on the board of the National Society of Colonial Dames and was the co-chair of the Fellows of the Library of America. She actively supports the work of contemporary Native artists by acquiring works of art, especially from indigenous women artists.

Benita is an avid traveler and visits England frequently to visit her family. She has followed her father’s lifelong attendance in the Anglican/Episcopal Church.
