The Second Sunday After The Epiphany

The Second Sunday After The Epiphany

God, whose Son our Savior Jesus Christ is the light of the world: Grant that thy   people, illumined by thy Word and Sacraments, may shine with the radiance of Christ’s glory, that he may be known, worshiped, and obeyed to the ends of the earth; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who with thee and the Holy Spirit liveth and reigneth, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Life is often like riding a roller coaster.

Even in a day, we experience emotions that go up and down several times.

I am happy with the joy of being able to start my pastoral life with great priests and parishioners in this church where I can learn so much.

But I see things that I didn’t have to see when I was only in Long Island.

Every morning, I start my day by coming to church with sadness and anguish, witnessing the reality of the homeless sleeping on subway chairs.

In life, no one can smell only the scent of roses. Such life does not exist.

As Paul tells us in Romans, we know that whole creation has been groaning in travail together until now.

As we heard in the prophecy of Isaiah, darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples.

In Bethlehem, the smallest city in Judah, the baby Jesus had to come out to this world in a shabby stable because his mother could not afford a room to give birth.

The bride and groom, starting a new life in Cana of Galilee, was in a difficult situation of running out of wine and disrespecting guests at a wedding feast.

However, because of the thick darkness that covered the whole earth, the light could shine brighter.

Bethlehem, where Jesus was born, is not the least of the land of Judah, and a shabby stable could become a holy place.

And the first miracle of Jesus could be performed at the wedding because of the problem of running out of wine.

Indeed, as Paul said, we know that in everything God works for good with those who love him, who are called according to his purpose.

We are not people who live a life whose purpose is to live a smooth life, without any troubles.

We are not just people who have faith to live a comfortable life.

We are the people of God predestined to be conformed to the image of God’s Son.

We are people of faith who live with hope for what we do not see and wait for it with patience and live with the help of the Holy Spirit.

That is why we are gathered here to dedicate to God not only gold, frankincense, and myrrh, but to dedicate a present, this moment to God for the future.

The sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.

Let us arise, and shine, for the light has come and the glory of the Lord has risen upon us!
