Confirmation

The Holy Trinity, surrounded by angels, depicted in the center of the Confirmation Window at Saint Thomas Church

The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.
Romans iix.16

In Confirmation, an individual reaffirms their baptismal vows, commits themselves to the way of Christ, and publicly professes the faith of the church, the faith once delivered to the apostles. A Bishop then confirms them in their affirmation and profession through prayer, anointing, and the laying-on of hands. Confirmation is a way by which the seed of grace planted in us at baptism takes deeper root, empowered by the indwelling presence of the Spirit. Confirmation is usually preceded by a period of catechesis or learning more about the faith and how it is locally expressed in the parish church—this is done in community.
