Martin Luther King, Jr.
Almighty God, by the hand of Moses your servant you led your people out of slavery, and made them free at last: Grant that your church, following the example of your prophet Martin Luther King, may resist oppression in the name of your love, and may strive to secure for all your children the blessed liberty of the Gospel of Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

This series of Sunday classes is on selected parochial and plain sermons of John Henry Newman. There are eight published volumes of these sermons, given by Newman when he was an Anglican priest (and republished some years ago in a fine one-volume edition by Ignatius Press). We will not do them all! Fr Austin’s plan is this: each week to consider one sermon that is connected to our place in the liturgical year.
On January 15, Fr Austin speaks about one of Newman’s Epiphany sermons, “The Glory of the Christian Church.” (This is sermon #8 in volume 2.) Fr Austin gives a summary of Newman’s argument, and then the class sees what it can make of it. It isn’t expected that you read the sermon in advance, but if you want to, here’s a link to it.
