Sunday Theology Talk: Theologies of Engagament

Led by Dr. Sean Larsen of Marquette University on Sunday, October 8, 2023 at 10am on the 5th floor of the Parish House and via Zoom.

How should the church relate to society? Traditionally, Christians have understood the prophet Jeremiah’s instructions to “seek the welfare of the city” (Jeremiah 29.7) as a broad mandate to pursue the common good as an expression of love for neighbor.

This talk will discuss how Christians have defined justice, human dignity, and the common good and then look at some of the ways they have pursued the common good. It will focus on various (and sometimes overlapping) models of engagement, including traditions of almsgiving and institution building, monastic and quasi-monastic traditions, state influence, spiritual education, and power-building in civil society.
