Christ the Teacher in the Ambulatory of Saint Thomas Church
Dear Friends in Christ,
Today we welcome our special guest, the Most Reverend Michael A. O. Lewis, Archbishop of the Anglican Diocese of Cyprus and the Gulf.
The Diocese of Cyprus and the Gulf is one of four dioceses in the Episcopal Church in Jerusalem and the Middle East, a province in the Anglican Communion. It covers Cyprus and the Arabian Peninsula, Iraq and Yemen. In every part of the diocese, except in Cyprus and Iraq, the congregations are largely expatriate, with many Christians from Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, the Philippines and the African continent. The diocese is linked with the Diocese of Exeter and the Diocese of Thika in Kenya.
Born in Hampshire in 1953, Michael Lewis read Oriental Studies and then, as a second degree, Theology at Merton College, Oxford, and at Cuddesdon Theological College. After ordination in 1978, he served successively as a curate, a college chaplain, and a parish priest in South London in the Diocese of Southwark, before becoming team rector, rural dean, and finally canon in the Diocese of Worcester, where he also chaired the synodical House of Clergy and the Advisory Committee for the Care of Churches.
From 1999 to 2007 he was Bishop of Middleton, a large, mainly urban area from the centre of Manchester to the top of the Pennines. He is a member of the International Commission for Anglican-Orthodox Theological Dialogue, and a board member of the Al Amana Interfaith Centre in the Sultanate of Oman. He also represents the Province of Jerusalem and the Middle East on the Anglican Consultative Council.
Here is a document on a parish in Bishop Lewis’ diocese, St. George’s, Baghdad, that he would like to share before his time with us.
You are welcome to join me in person on the Fifth Floor of the Parish House or on Zoom. Simply contact us for more information.
Grace and peace to you,
Fr. Matthew Moretz+
Vicar
