The Fifteenth Sunday After Pentecost

The Fifteenth Sunday After Pentecost

Grant us, O Lord, not to mind earthly things, but to love things heavenly; and even now, while we are placed among things that are passing away, to cleave to those that shall abide; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. (Proper 20)

In this series examining the Christian theological tradition, we look at the four ecumenical councils of the Church, as they sought to articulate orthodox Christian belief. Today we turn to the First Council of Constantinople (A.D. 381). In finalizing the Nicene Creed as we use it today, the Council affirmed the full humanity of Jesus Christ, and the full deity of the Holy Spirit.
