This series of Sunday classes is on selected parochial and plain sermons of John Henry Newman. There are eight published volumes of these sermons, given by Newman when he was an Anglican priest (and republished some years ago in a fine one-volume edition by Ignatius Press). We will not do them all! Fr Austin’s plan is this: each week to consider one sermon that is connected to our place in the liturgical year.
Today’s (February 5) class will be on a sermon that John Henry Newman gave on Septuagesima (the third Sunday before Lent, roughly 70 days before Easter): “Many Called, Few Chosen.” This is sermon #18 in volume #5 of “Parochial and Plain Sermons.” If you’d like to look at it before the class, you can find it here. But whether you’ve read it or not, you are welcome to the class, 10 a.m. on the 5th floor.
