The First Sunday In Lent

The First Sunday In Lent

Almighty God, whose blessed Son was led by the Spirit to be tempted of Satan; Make speed to help thy servants who are assaulted by manifold temptations; and, as thou knowest their several infirmities, let each one find thee mighty to save; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Above: “In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost” in the Confirmation Window of Saint Thomas Church. Fr Daniels preaches this evening on “taking the name of the Lord in vain,” the fourth sermon in the Commandments as Good News series.

About Choral Evensong: Based on the services held daily in the medieval Church, Choral Evensong as arranged in the Book of Common Prayer of the Anglican Church has been sung regularly since the Sixteenth Century. Many people who are new to worship at Saint Thomas prefer to come to Choral Evensong because it is relatively contemplative. The service includes readings (just as would occur at Evening Prayer) and prayers led by a priest. An anthem as well as a setting of the Magnificat and the Nunc dimittis are sung by the choir. Read more about Choral Evensong here, or view the Choral Evensong Service Card posted a few days prior to this service to the bottom of this page, where links to the webcast are posted during and after the service.
‚ñ∫There is no Mass following Choral Evensong on Sundays. If you would like to make your Holy Communion for the week, consider attending one of the morning Eucharists, or else at any of the other fourteen masses at Saint Thomas later this week.

‚ñ∫Lenten practices: In his Ash Wednesday sermon, Fr Mead spoke about the three traditional lenten disciplines of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Consider worshiping with us on weekdays in Lent, or making your confession (which the Rector speaks about his weekly audio message), or meditating each day on the word of God and reflections on the word of God.The Rector speaks about Lenten discipline in his weekly audio message. ‚ñ∫We are in the midst of the Candlemas Campaign of the 2013 Every Member Canvass. For those who have not yet pledged to the 2013 EMC and would like to be recognized as active supporters of Saint Thomas Church and Choir School, the Candlemas Campaign offers a chance to do just that. Feel free to email Ann Hall Kaplan if you have any questions. Thank you to everyone who has already pledged, and thank you for considering making one if you haven’t yet. You may pledge online here.
