The Second Sunday In Lent
O God, whose glory it is always to have mercy: Be gracious to all who have gone astray from thy ways, and bring them again with penitent hearts and steadfast faith to embrace and hold fast the unchangeable truth of thy Word, Jesus Christ thy Son; who with thee and the Holy Spirit liveth and reigneth, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

This series of Sunday classes is on selected parochial and plain sermons of John Henry Newman. There are eight published volumes of these sermons, given by Newman when he was an Anglican priest (and republished some years ago in a fine one-volume edition by Ignatius Press). We will not do them all! Fr Austin’s plan is this: each week to consider one sermon that is connected to our place in the liturgical year.
This week we will look at a sermon John Henry Newman preached, ‚ÄúLife the Season of Repentance.‚Äù Fr Austin will try to unpack the structure of the sermon and we will examine together some of the biblical references. If you’d like to read it in advance (not required), it is in Parochial and Plain Sermons, vol. 6, no. 2. You can find it online here.
