This series of Sunday classes is on selected parochial and plain sermons of John Henry Newman. There are eight published volumes of these sermons, given by Newman when he was an Anglican priest (and republished some years ago in a fine one-volume edition by Ignatius Press). We will not do them all! Fr Austin’s plan is this: each week to consider one sermon that is connected to our place in the liturgical year.

This week we look at an interesting lenten sermon, “Apostolic Abstinence, a Pattern for Christians.” The scriptural text is Paul’s admonition to Timothy that he take a little wine for his stomach’s sake–so we have a sermon on abstinence based on an admonition to take some wine! Visitors are welcome any week: on the 5th floor, at 10 a.m. (If you’d like to look at the sermon, you can find it in Volume 6; it’s the third sermon. It is also online here.
